What are Probiotics? Probiotics are the opposite of Antibiotics. Biotics refers to bacterial organisms. Whereas antibiotics are medicine which destroy bacteria that cause infections, some deadly, probiotics introduce more bacteria into the body, and helps them proliferate.
What they are for?
Probiotic supplements contain “friendly” bacteria htat proliferate in your gut. Inside the intestines friendly bacteria, commonly called “flora” help maintain a healthy digestive system. Scientist have recently discovered well over 100 different friendly bacterial species inside humans intestines. These bacteria are monumental to our overall health, and an imbalance can lead to serious complications.
Types of Probiotics
Most probiotic supplements you find in your local health food stores are usually acidophilus. This friendly bacteria aids digestion, and other functions. Acidophilus helps absorbs fats, and keravita pro B-Vitamins. It also keeps other bacteria in check, keeping the balance.
Complications of the digestive system.
Some digestive complications are caused by lack or too much of these friendly bacteria. Candida infection is a fungal infection from yeast. Yeast starts of as a bacteria in the gut. Everybody has yeast in their gut. It’s necessary as long as it is kept in balance, and prevented from over proliferating. Too much yeast develops into a fungus, and causes leaky gut syndrome. This in turn causes other complications, like inflammation, infection, depressed immune system, and even cancer. Some diseases like Celiac, inflammatory bowel syndrome, and even parasitic infections can create an imbalance of the intestinal flora, making probiotic supplements a must have.
Research of Flora
Probiotic supplements are not new, we have been consuming them for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Yogurt is a good probiotic supplement. Yogurt is cultured milk, or milk which contains added bacteria. I eat yogurt regularly to add more digestive flora in my diet. My favorite is Chobani greek yogurt. It’s high in protein, doesn’t have added preservatives, food coloring, or other unnatural ingredients, and has up three times as much protein as other yogurts Honestly, I don’t even consider the other brands yogurt when compared to Chobani. Researchers are continuing studies of the intestinal bacteria and the role in which they play, many scientist are coming to believe that allergies, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel syndrome, and other complications are caused by not having enough or the correct balance of intestinal flora.
After antibiotics came into being in the last 50 years, many digestive complaints were not too common. However, after antibiotics which resulted in the elimination of many deadly diseases, many digestive problems became widespread. Antibiotics are a must in medicine, imagine having a deadly kidney infection like nephritis, how would you overcome this without the use of antibiotics? True many bacteria are now becoming immune to antibiotics, and the time to create more powerful, and new lines of immune defense/offense is needed. However Antibiotics have been a wonderful addition to the arsenal against pathogens, so I do not want to paint them in a negative light, however Doctors are known to over prescribe and recommend Antibiotics for common ailments.
Antibiotics destroy bacteria, that is their purpose. But what about “friendly” bacteria, used by the body to help digest nutrients like vitamins, proteins, and fats? Yes antibiotics kills these also. Perhaps this is the reason for so many digestive disorders after their widespread implementation. Anyhow if the Dr. ever prescribes you antibiotics, take them!!! Just add a probiotic supplement during, and after your treatment to ensure you have the proper balance of flora in your tummy.
Destroying many bacteria leads to the over proliferation of another kind. Mainly yeast, which loves sugar, so it creates many sugar cravings to keep itself fed. Other bacteria stop others from reproducing, spreading, and causing infection. We have strands of Salmonella, and E. Coli in our gut, however these are not the same strands that make us sick, quite contrary these strands stop other bacteria which would make us sick from spreading. Therefore intestinal flora are necessary for our overall health and wellness.
